Totally ADD – the recycling edition
While I want this blog to be an oasis that nourishes you, sometimes I come across remarkable stuff that has only a passing resemblance to relevant blog content. ADD is my excuse for the random fun you’ll find here. Enjoy!

Sometimes half the journey is knowing where to send it all!
Here are some out-there ideas for giving things away to be reused:
- Humane Societies take pet food, blankets, paper towel rolls, newspapers
- Latex paint recycle centers
- Craigslist.org
- Freecycle.org

Best Buy is now taking electronics for free (mostly), except if there’s a screen. Makes it easy to unload those unwanted, discarded things.
They do have a limit of two per day

I recently took my first batch of metal scrap (everything from old keys to random things found in the yard when digging in the garden to used nails and old electric boxes pulled out of the walls during rewiring) to a scrap yard. They took it all, and they even gave me $6!
Aveda stores take rigid plastic caps, I hear, and one of my neighbors collects them and takes them every so often, so we keep a container under the sink next to our regular recycling to save those up.
Our town hall has techno trash for everything from old CDs (think AOL freebies from the mail or out-of-date backups) and VHS tapes (that can’t go to the library for resale to raise money) to whole computers (when good hard drives and power supplies go bad). Any computer stuff that still works, there’s a local place called Computers Assisting People. They took an old scanner, a printer, a monitor, cell phones, software/manuals, and they set up systems for people in women’s shelters, etc.
I know some schools take old magazines for craft projects and they also take donations of craft supplies. I route mine through some neighbors with kids since I don’t have kids.
Oh, and let’s not forget compost. Food scraps but also things like brown paper towels (the white ones are bleached and can leach toxins into soil) and even hair (swept up off the floor, perhaps our cat’s main contribution to the household economy?) and fingernails. Recycle it all into delicious soil for your garden.
