Totally ADD – Halloween costume party edition
It’s Halloween (almost)!
And I’m having a virtual costume party!
To get the ball rolling, a few friends volunteered their favorite childhood costumes:
Lisa Hunter: Princess Leia, complete with double-donut hair and a dress my mom made from living room drapes.
Sally Kuhlman: One year when I was a teenager, I dressed up as Santa Claus for Halloween and little kids kept saying, “Look, Mommy, there’s Santa!” and wanting to come up and talk to me.
Sharon Roemmel: This isn’t from my childhood, but apparently people call me “Peter Pan” when I’m not around and I kind of remind people of a wood nymph or pixie. So this year I’m going to get elf boots with a wreath of leaves in my hair and many find some pointy ears.
Joanne Scharer: I went as a garbage bag one too many times (Mom wasn’t into costumes) and I was Strawberry Shortcake once.
Inspired Spouse: The Devil. Many times – because I liked the horns and the red costume… plus I was a little devil myself.
Jen Hofmann: Hands down, being a butterfly in nursery school was my very favorite costume. Nice job, Mom.
Costume Party instructions (there’s candy involved):
Mention your favorite childhood costume before Saturday night and get a chance to win some really good candy. We’re talking treats, not tricks. Winners chosen at random (it’s ADD day, of course it’s random!).
What was YOUR favorite childhood costume?
Organized under Uncategorized. Labeled as candy, costume, Halloween, Joanne Scharer, Lisa Hunter, party, Sally Kuhlman, Sharon Roemmel, Totally ADD.

I was Stevie Nicks once, in high school. Hard to walk the streets for long on those boots, though…

I dressed as Serial Mom one year, complete with a pristine (but bloody) manicure and “blood” tastefully coating the heel of one pink pump. (It wasn’t white, because of course Halloween is after Labor Day!)

Best kid costume I ever did was a fried egg. Best adult costume I had was either A Little White Lie (stuff written on my outfit like Check is in the Mail, Not Tonight I Have a Headache, and What a Cute Baby) or Arthur Dent (genesis: how can I go to work in my pajamas?). I love Halloween.

I remember one year I dressed as a Christmas tree and my brother dressed as a Pumpkin. My mom made the costumes out of bristol board. So cute.
My kid has a tendency to dress as historical characters (e.g. Florence Nightingale) or characters from novels. People rarely know who she is though this year it is Anne of Green Gables and we’ve died her hair red.

Talk about ADD–one year I couldn’t make up my mind so I went as a fairy princess/ballerina/clown.

I’ve got a very sweet photograph of me from childhood … dressed as a masked princess. I look very capable with short hair and my Lone-Ranger-esque mask … wearing the pretty blue flower girl dress from a friend’s wedding — oh, and don’t forget the magic wand!
My other favorite costume is from right after college. I’ve always loved words and writing. So, I got some velcro and some poster board and made myself into a magnetic poetry board. FUN!

The touring company for CATS came through town when I was seven or so and my mom took me – I loved it! That Halloween, I went as one of the cats from the show – not any specific one, though. The costume involved the standard cat ears/nose/tail, plenty of makeup, and loads of costume jewelry to top it off. I absolutely adored it.
@Sarah – I was magnetic poetry a few years ago! A fuzzy black sweater and words on velcro… it was fun!

Just had to chime in again as my husband reminded me of when we took our oldest out his first time. We were Deadheads then, as dressed (normally) as such. When asked what we were, our reply: ‘undesirable elements of society’.
No one, of course, could argue with that.

My favorite childhood costume was Pippi Longstocking — oversized shoes, mismatched socks, a patchwork dress, and bright red braids! Pippi was always so unabashedly herself, so unashamedly outlandish, and I think that’s one of the hidden joys of Halloween.

It wasn’t from my childhood, but still my favorite costume — when I was in college, I had the chance to go to Mardi Gras in New Orleans, and splurged on the most gorgeous black feather mask (still inspires me, http://www.etsy.com/view_listing.php?listing_id=29004620 ) I wore it with a slinky evening gown and long black gloves. It was the most elegant outfit I’ve ever worn, and totally out of the norm for me. Loved it :}
